If you’re fortunate enough to have been raised in Montana or the Catskills or if you have adopted the annual Rocky Mountain Trout Circuit, you’ve seen plenty of trout. While trout and the adventure of the west may hold your attention for a lifetime, it’s very difficult if not impossible to ignore the rest of the fly fishing world. From the GT’s in the Seychelles to Sea Run Browns in Tierra del Fuego to the Florida Key’s Giant Tarpon to Alaska’s huge Silvers and beyond, there’s a lot out there to explore. Your 4-weight trout rods won’t get the job done.

Travel in-and-of-itself can be expensive. While there are a few places in the world where you can do it yourself, spending $3,500 to $7,000 on a destination trip is not unusual and is more of the norm. Add the cost of getting there and all the new equipment you’ll need to your list,  and you might think twice about going to your destination of a lifetime. Who knows? You might not like fishing for bonefish in the Bahamas.  We doubt that, but what are you going to do with your new rod and reel combo that cost you around $1300 if you don’t? Once you become addicted to permit and tarpon, your investment climbs significantly. If you’re heading to Belize, you’ll need an 8, 10, and 12 weight rod and reel combinations to cover all the species of fish you’ll encounter. Belize’s Permit will put any reel to its ultimate test and so will their tarpon. You really need good equipment.
