Giant Taimen in MongoliaClick Here to See the Taimen Conservation Video

Of all the unique places in the world to fish for salmonoids there is no place more special than Mongolia. Mongolia is located in northern Asia. It is bordered by Russia to the north and China to the south. This is the land of Genghis Kahn and the history of his conquests is legendary. This is the land of the Taimen, a fish steeped in local lore. It is a member of the trout family and at one time had a much broader reach throughout the world but because of overharvesting and environmental conditions its range has been greatly lessened. Mongolia and the Lenok River are home to Taimen ranging up to 56 inches that will explode on a dry fly properly presented. Castafly Travel has joined forces with Sweetwater and the Vermillion brothers to enable the angler to travel and experience this unique fish and cultural experience. Mongolia offers the traveler the opportunity to learn the ways of a culturally diverse people with great tradition and combine this with incomparable fishing. It is the only country left in the world where one can ride 1900 miles from west to east without finding any man made barriers. This is not only a fishing adventure of a lifetime but a learning experience showing how a beautiful people in a beautiful land live.

Fishing

Fly Fishing Mongolia for Taimen

The fishing in the region is easily accomplished mostly by wading in shallow, clear water using only flies. Access to the fishing is done by boat giving the angler excellent access to the runs and glides that hold these huge fish. Taimen, lenok, arctic grayling, and amur pike are all present in the region to be fished. There is nothing more exciting than having a Taimen attack a mouse pattern on the surface or swallow a streamer just under to get the blood rushing. The Lenox is Mongolia’s equivalent of the rainbow trout ranging up to 28 inches. Using the same techniques as for the Taimen they prove to be a tough quarry. All in all, fishing in Mongolia is an experience that all experienced fishermen should try. Castafly invites you to visit Mongolia.

The Camp: The camps are located on nice stretches of river in the remote outback of Mongolia. Our fishermen have provided glowing reports about the standard of service and level of comfort at the camp. Each camp is equipped with a dining lodge, bathhouse and shower facility; 110 electricity supplied by our on-site generator is available for charging video cameras, satellite phones, etc.
