Exotic Trips

Guatemala
Sailfish Bay Lodge is located right in the middle of what many consider to be the best sailfish habitat on the planet - the Pacific coast of Guatemala.  Very strong currents, flowing from west to east down the Mexican coastline, slam into El Salvador before creating an enormous, clockwise naturally occurring eddy. This eddy forms a vortex that is extremely rich in baitfish attracting billfish and many other sport pelagics in great numbers. After years of scientific research scientists who have studied the large number of sailfish off the coast of Guatemala have concluded that this area is the largest breeding ground of Pacific sailfish in the world.

Guatamala Fly Fishng for Sailfish

The Fishing

Anglers from all over the world visit the Pacific coast of Guatemala for incredible sailfishing and that is what the fishing program targets over 90% of the time. The captains and mates are all well experienced so you can expect great things to happen when you are out on the water. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced angler you will definitely learn from the captains, but mostly from the mates as they will be right there with you on the deck during the entire day. The techniques for teasing a sailfish into fly casting range can be difficult but when the anglers and the mates work together success is usually very high. It is not out of the ordinary to have multiple fish on the line at one time which is a fun but hectic situation. Not to worry, as the mates are so good at what they do you have high percentages of landing most fish that you get close. Expect a lot of the fishing to be visual once the sailfish are located as they are very predatory, acrobatic and big! Expect the fish to chase, jump, crash, flip and do anything else you would expect out of fishing gymnastics! We recommend that you get you arms in shape before this one as you will be put to the test.

Guatamala Fly Fishing for SailfishAlong with the extremely high numbers of sailfish you can also find dorado, marlin, and tuna in the deep blue water and when inshore conditions are right you can have shots at roosterfish, jacks and other species. Although, most anglers concentrate on the sails there are plenty of other fish around to keep you entertained and are often caught in the same areas as the billfish.

The captain and crew at Sailfish Bay Lodge are all very experienced in the unique techniques of “bait and switch” and will make sure that you are educated and coached while chasing the sails. There are plenty of fish and fishing grounds in this area so don’t expect to be amongst crowds or worrying about getting somewhere before other boats.  Catching big fish without crowds; does it get any better?
