FlyCastaway Field Report - November 5, 2010

Filed by Keith Rose-Innes

I have just got back into port from St Brandon's and it was off the charts. With all the feedback we get from seasoned anglers, there’s little doubt that St Brandon’s is the world class Bonefish & Indo Pacific Permit fishery. Every trip leaves our clients amazed at the sheer quantity of Bonefish and the amazing average size. Just when we think it can’t get better- it does. This was one of those trips where the GT’s also played their role. We thought we were lucky when Mark Hatter- a photographer from ‘Fly Fishing in Salt Water’- landed a GT of 118cm on the first day. He had set a precedent, and Vince landed another GT of 125cm soon after. If lucky we’d usually land a couple of GT’s every trip, but this week was to be an exception. By the end of the week we’d landed 4 GT’s over 118cm. A 118cm, 122cm, 125cm and the largest was taken by Ole at 127cm. It was caught on the last full fishing day, as Ole had lost 3 large GT’s due to hooks pulling when finally catching this fish on his last encounter. Along with Big GT’s come many hook pulling incidents, line parting and missed opportunities. As well as the incredible size of Bonefish if you do encounter a GT at St Brandon’s it’s more than likely “Super Sized”. Guido Sesani was the first angler to achieve a St Brandon’s Grand Slam- Bonefish, Permit, and GT- all in the same day. Mark also slammed- Bonefish, Permit, and Bluefin Trevally- another unbelievable achievement many anglers spend years trying to obtain. To add to the achievements there where 6 beautiful Permit landed, numerous Bonefish over 10lbs, the biggest being Vince’s at 12,5lbs. The Bluefin, Goldens and Greenspot where a little scarce with only a few being landed, maybe due to the influx of big GT’s. Many thanks to Mark for sharing his beautiful photographs with us.
